Now I'm here to try to gather information. I am just about to start my final year internship in a Grade 6/7 class. I love the kids already. I love being in the classroom.
The Lecturer Visits...
Having had my lecturer visit yesterday to see how I'm travelling, I gained a few points for reflection.
How to really know whether they get it. Which kids understand and which need more...?
Once I have the formative assessment information, how to actually show it. Matrix etc?
Ok so I tried a new idea in class last session yesterday...I got all the kids to write what they knew about 'forces' on a scrap of paper at the beginning of the lesson. I did this to activate their prior knowledge. Then at the end of the lesson, I got them to represent force on a diagram. This would assess the two learning outcomes for that particular lesson. BTW: They enjoyed this :)
Now's where it gets tricky. I then spent a fair amount of time making a spreadsheet with outcomes across the top. Then even longer reading the scraps and judging whether to 'tick' their box for each outcome. I then used this data to form three groups (differentiation).
Ok...now I have my spreadsheet...it's looking good. But what now?
I know I need to transfer this information into my planning for the next lesson (this ability will obviously demonstrate my capabilities as per the Australian Standards for Teachers) but the actual 'how' of this has me wondering. How will manage the kids into these groups? What will I give to each group to do? How will I watch this group and not miss what the others are doing?
I'm probably overthinking it all as usual (sigh...) but I just want to do a good job.
I know that I can not only help the kids by doing this (my main concern obviously) but also evidence my demonstration of the standards by highlighting the links between the formative assessment, the classifying, and the planning of future teaching.
Anyone reading this...that has any ideas...any help much appreciated....
:)
